The Return to America

I married a Brit almost twenty years ago.  It was the best decision of my life despite his appalling lack of knowledge in some crucial areas:  Mexican food, sourdough bread, the art of a good bbq.  What kind of world view is that?

But despite his shortcomings, it's been a wonderful adventure since our eyes first locked across 6,000 miles in cyberspace.  (THAT is another story. . .)

We've travelled a lot, are raising four amazing kids (having fostered many more), and, ten years ago, found ourselves going back to England for what we thought was to be a year.  Somehow, it turned into 8 ½.  Last year, however, we made our way back to California and I have to confess, it's been a major readjustment for our family.

Prairie Mindsets

I don't live on the prairie.  I never have. Oh, I have visited them, and I do have a brother and extended family firmly entrenched in Minnesota, but I don't think that counts.

I do, however, have a 'prairie mindset.'  Though, to be honest, I am making that term up, too, and defining it to prove my point.  But I digress.

A prairie mindset doesn't mean that your head is filled with endless fields of waving wheat or visions of wells and churns and soddies.  It doesn't mean you wear sunbonnets, button up shoes and long skirts as you leave your farm and make your weekly walk into town.

Modern Pioneering

'Modern Pioneering.'  Catchy, huh?  It has an air of urban homesteading about it, don't you think?  Like it would be nothing at all to go outside in your homespun Capris, pluck some organic eggs from under your free range hens and then whip them up into Eggs Benedict, or a frittata, or even a soufflĂ©!

I made up the term. . .at least I think I did.  I don't remember reading it anywhere, though it's certainly possible.  I read a lot.  But, for the purpose of this blog, I definitely made it up.  No question about it.  And that means I get to define it!

Modern Pioneering is a sleek hybrid, melding all the best bits of yesterday and today in one glossy, uber cool package.  You want to be a Modern Pioneer.  It oozes charm and sophistication.
