The Colin Kaepernick Kerfuffle -- 49er Fun

There seems to be a lot of fluff flying about ahead of the 49er v. Seahawks playoff game next Sunday, and most of it isn't pretty.  Don't get me wrong, though, I know a little good-natured smack talk is all part of the fun.

If that's all it is.

But this is getting silly.  Attacking a person's character as a means to justify why your team should win a game, for goodness sake, is a step beyond the pale.  And way beneath a true fan of the sport!

Have you seen what's been making the rounds?  It's a pretty tacky denigration of Colin Kaepernick's character.  A side by side comparison of the 49er's quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the Seattle Seahawk's quarterback Russell Wilson basically paints Wilson as a saint and Kaepernick as a self-absorbed dipwad.

I don't know either man personally, but I think that circulating a side by side comparison with photos such as Wilson posing philanthropically with sick children while Kaepernick hangs with celebrities is a little misleading.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that the person who trolled through each QB's Instagram accounts and collected this slightly, um, biased selection of photos is probably a Seattle fan.  But, really?  Perhaps a more balanced view would be a little more honorable.

After all, Colin Kaepernick actually does a lot more than kiss biceps and look good.

Wilson does do a lot of great community work in the Seattle area, granted. He's a pretty dang good guy. But, guess, what?  Kaepernick does a lot, too.  Just ask the kids who attend Camp Taylor in Salida, CA.  Camp Taylor helps kids with heart defects, which is an issue Kaepernick has a deep personal connection to.  Colin lost two brothers, Lance and Kent, as infants to heart issues.

And he doesn't just lend his name, likeness and financial support either (though he does that, too. . .generously).  He spends time there.  He interacts with, supports, and encourages the kids.  He rocks their golf tournament. And if you look at the Camp Taylor website or twitter feed and you'll see plenty of Colin-n-kid photos.

So, seriously?  If you want to diss the bicep kiss, go ahead.  Though, just for informational purposes, he's not really kissing his arm, it's the Psalm 27:3 verse tattooed there that's on the receiving end of the smooch:

“Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.”

So, let's review: Stats match-ups?  Fair game.  Good natured ribbing?  Certainly.  A cheeky bit of smack talk?  Count me in!  But character assassination?  Please don't.

Both Wilson and Kaepernick are pretty decent guys.  And they are awesome quarterbacks.  This Sunday's game is going to SPECTACULAR.

Let's just leave it at that.
