I've been thinking a lot about 'labels' the last couple of days.  They have such incredible weight, both negative and positive.  Labels can be used in so many ways. . .to diminish or demean (unintelligent, lazy) or to categorize (dry clean only, gluten free) or even to build up (most valuable player, Fullbright scholar), for example.

We're shoved into so many boxes. . .male/female. . .republican/democrat. . .married/single. . .as if we need to define each other in order to understand and relate to each other.

But I wish that wasn't so.

I wish we could be the various glorious gradients of whatever it is we are, without having to squeeze into labels too small or drown in labels too big.

Ironically, though, I need a label now. . .I need one desperately.

I need someone to figure out where my complicated, precious boy lies on a number of scales and assign him labels so he can access appropriate services.

Frustrating, but necessary.

I wish it wasn't so.
