More on Home Made Carpet Cleaners (for spots and for machines!)

After yesterday's blog post about home made carpet cleaners, I was inspired to break out my machine and attack my son's room.  It hadn't been cleaned in awhile and had that distinctive 'boy smell' going on.

However, after the first pass, I noticed that there were some darker spots/stains on the carpet that I hadn't seen before I started.

I don’t even want to know what made them!!

So I paused before making my final pass to put together a home made carpet spot cleaner that, like my home made carpet cleaner, is both effective and inexpensive.

Here’s what I went for:

Spot Cleaner for Carpet #1

  • 3 Tablespoons Borax
  • 3 Tablespoons Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons Vinegar
  • Mix all ingredients into a paste
  • Rub into the stain and leave for an hour or two to dry
  • Vacuum thoroughly, then use your carpet cleaner if you have one

If that floats your boat, you might also try these options:

Spot Cleaner for Carpet #2

  • White vinegar and
  • Baking soda in equal parts
  • Mix together to make a paste
  • Work the paste into the stain using an old brush or cloth
  • When dry, vacuum up
  • (If needed, repeat until stain is gone)

Spot Cleaner for Carpet #3 (best for Natural Fiber Carpet)

  • One Teaspoon Translucent Liquid Dish washing Detergent (such as Dawn)
  • 1 Cup of Warm Water
  • Mix well in a spray bottle
  • Mist spot lightly
  • Blot up and repeat if necessary

And if you're looking for other carpet cleaning solutions for your home carpet cleaner (other than the one I posted HERE!), here's a couple more:

Simplest Carpet Shampoo Solution:

  • Hot Water (hottest you can get from the tap)
  • White Vinegar
  • Mix equal parts hot water and white vinegar
  • Add to machine and clean as per instructions

Sweet Smelling Carpet Shampoo Solution:

  • 1/8 Cup Liquid Laundry Detergent (you can use home made!)
  • 1/2 Gallon of Very Warm Water

  • Mix well and shampoo as usual

Please Note:  Always test your carpet with any cleaning solution in a very inconspicuous place to check for colorfastness.  Most carpets will be perfectly fine with these options, but you never know and it's best to check before you address a large stain in the middle of a room!

Also, apparently, not all home carpet cleaning machines are okay with using home made solutions.  Check with the manufacturer to make sure you don't damage your machine!
